Despite the fact that President Obamas federal budget increases the National Endowment for the Arts budget by 4 percent, at least two state governments are not following his lead, Artnet reports.
On Wednesday, Republicans in the Pennsylvania state senate proposed slashing funding for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts from $15 million down to zero in fiscal year 2010.
Heather Doughty, deputy director of the council, told the Pennsylvania Daily Review that the senate budget would have "a major impact on arts programs and activities" throughout the state, effectively eliminating the council's ability to provide grants to countless arts organizations.
At the same time, in something of a reverse move, Florida upped the arts allocation in its budget from an originally planned zero for 2010 cultural and museum grants to $2.5 million — a figure still well below last year's $6.9 million. State arts funding there has dropped more than 90 percent in two years.
Sherron Long, of the Florida Cultural Alliance, told a Tallahassee newspaper that the situation "will have a huge effect on programs. We'll see some organizations actually close."
