Published: May 20, 2009
OVIEDO, Spain—Architect Norman Foster, considered one of Britain’s most prolific builders, is to receive Spain's Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. He will be presented with the prize at an October ceremony here, presided over by the Prince of Asturias.

Foster, whose designs include Germany’s Reichstag parliament building, is the founder and chairman of Foster + Partners. Over the past four decades, the international company’s work has included urban master plans, public infrastructure, airports, civic and cultural buildings, offices and workplaces, private houses, and product design. Foster + Partners has worked on the Millau Viaduct in France and the HSBC Holdings headquarters in East London's Canary Wharf. Foster has also won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 1999.

The Prince of Asturias Awards, which were created by the Prince of Asturias Foundation in 1981, recognize scientific, technical, cultural, social, and humanistic work carried out at an international level. Awards are presented in eight categories: arts, social sciences, communication and humanities, concord, international cooperation, sports, technical and scientific research, and letters.
