Economic turmoil is shuttering doors on Newbury Street, the famous shopping street in Boston with a number of high-end, high-rent art galleries.
Two galleries have announced that they will close at the end of June. Nielsen Gallery, which is a Boston landmark, will close June 30 after 46 years in business, although its owners say the economy has been less of a factor than simply wanting to try something new. Meanwhile, OH+T Gallery will shut down on June 20, due to a bad economic year, and Mercury Gallery closed its Newbury Street location last month. Mercury still has a gallery in Rockport, Mass., and says it may reopen in a smaller Newbury space in the fall.
