Prefab Design Not So Sustainable?

OAKLAND, Calif.— Green prefab architecture isn’t as sustainable as it was once touted to be, apparently: Over Memorial Day weekend green prefab architecture firm Michelle Kaufmann Designs decided to throw in the shovel, unable to survive the tumultuous economy.

Kaufmann, a former employee of both Frank Gehry and Michael Graves, told clients in a letter that the Oakland-based company would close by the end of the week. The architect, who started her own firm in 2004, was one of the first to equate prefab design with sustainability. But last year, after completing more than 40 prefab houses, Kaufmann sold the factory she operated outside Seattle and slashed her Oakland office staff to 17 from around two dozen as factories she worked with had gone under and clients couldn’t get financing.
