LONDON— British art tastemaker Charles Saatchi is turning his attention westward and launching a show of contemporary American art at his London gallery tomorrow. "Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture" presents the work of more than 30 artists, mostly from New York and Los Angeles, many of whose work has not been seen in the U.K. and some of whom do not have British representation.

Though the assertion that "London has been the center of the art world," by Rebecca Miller, Saatchi Gallery's head of development, seems a little questionable to us, the rest of what she has to say sounds promising enough: "...with this exhibition, you can really see the ambition and the scale of the ideas being explored by artists from New York and Los Angeles." Artists on the roster include, from New York, Francesca DiMattio and Gedi Sibony; Miami-based Guerra de la Paz; and L.A.'s Mark Grotjahn and Sterling Ruby. The show runs through September 13.
