An unusual Renoir painting depicting an ancient scene, probably from Greco-Roman mythology, was recovered by police this week after having been stolen a quarter of a century ago.
A resident of Treviso, north of Venice, said he purchased the work at a rummage sale but became suspicious of its origin. Italian police, working with colleagues in Britain and France and from Interpol, matched the work with a painting stolen from a family in Rome in 1984. The painting shows a public place with a man on a small staircase holding a staff, while others facing him in a crowd hold their hands and objects aloft. A police spokesman noted that Renoir did not paint many mythological scenes. Read more at Agence France-Presse.
