A Ukrainian researcher has challenged claims by Russia about just how much of its cultural heritage it lost to plundering during World War II.
According to Serhii Kot, a scholar at the Institute of History of Ukraine of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, most Russian researchers equate Russia and the Soviet Union, claiming all Soviet losses as Russian losses, while in fact as many as 55 percent of all recorded Soviet losses from museums actually took place in the now-independent Ukraine. Ukrainian losses could total up to 250,000 items from 21 major museums, as well as 50 million books.
