“Times” Readers Rank Top 200 Artists Since 1900

Published: June 9, 2009
LONDON— To rank the top 200 artists of the 20th century to now might seem like the work of an obsessive-compulsive or a masochist, but that’s exactly what the Times (London) did when it asked its readers to vote on the subject.

The top three results of the poll, which raked in a total 1.4 million votes, are, in order, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, and Gustav Klimt. Generally, painting ranked more frequently than sculpture, and the results show that readers are attracted to the early modern. Another interesting factoid: The top five artists are all dead — Jasper Johns is the first living artist on the list, at number 18.
