Zaha Hadid Architects Wins Cairo Expo City Competition

Published: June 9, 2009
CAIRO— Zaha Hadid Architects, the London-based namesake firm of the noted British-Iraqi architect, has won a project competition for Egypt’s new Cairo Expo City with a design inspired by an ancient river valley’s landscape.

A 450,000-square-meter, state-of-the-art city for exhibitions and conferences, the project will be located between the center of Cairo and the city’s airport. It comprises a major international exhibition and conference center with a business hotel, and an office tower and shopping center are also proposed. Hadid says the undulating and fluid forms of her design were inspired by the topography of the Nile Valley. Work begins in October to clear the site.

In April, Zaha Hadid Architects made the short list with Norwegian architecture firm Snohetta for the competition’s second phase.
