The decline in the contemporary-art market has hit this city’s galleries hard, resulting in some being forced to cut back their exhibition space and others closing their doors altogether. Still others have been forced to relocate.
The list of affected galleries, currently a dozen, is significant and includes a number of prominent dealers. They range from the now-closed Hacket-Freedman, which focused on postwar American and Californian art, to Hang Art, a showcase for works by emerging artists that has now downsized to one exhibition space. Still, there are some positive signs. The Altman Siegel Gallery has moved in from New York City, and painter-turned-gallerist George Lawson has opened up Room for Painting Room for Paper.
