Hadid’s Design for Chicago Pavilion Delayed

Published: June 16, 2009
CHICAGO— The Zaha Hadid–designed pavilion scheduled to open on Friday in Millennium Park in Chicago has been delayed due to the manufacturer's difficulty in realizing the London-based architect’s vision.

Hadid and Amsterdam architect Ben van Berkel were both commissioned to design temporary spaces as part of a celebration for the 1909 Plan of Chicago, also known as the Burnham Plan, this summer. Van Berkel's contribution, two planes connected by several curvilinear supports, will open as scheduled on Friday, while Hadid's, an organically inspired, elliptical structure to be constructed of more than 7,000 aluminum supports covered with a fabric skin, will require several more weeks.
