Economy Claims Bellwether Gallery

Published: June 19, 2009
NEW YORK—Bellwether Gallery, meant to lead emerging artists to green pastures, is closing its doors due to the turmoil in the economy.

The gallery, which is located at 134 10th Avenue in Chelsea, was started a decade ago in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, by Becky Smith. On June 16, she sent an email to supporters, informing them of the gallery’s demise. Bellwether helped launch the careers of artists such as Ellen Altfest, Tanyth Berkeley, Adam Cvijanovic, Trevor Paglen, Sharon Core, and Charlotta Westergren. Smith plans to continue working with artists, and the gallery's mission will live on in shows that she said were in the works in an “at-large capacity.”
