Conversation With William Goetzmann

By Sarah Douglas

Published: July 1, 2009
Where would an investor find opportunity in this market?

You want to look for the places where the money might come back, and what the people with that money are going to be buying. Areas like Indian and Chinese art, even though they might be very highly valued currently, are places to continue to look. Where are the next billionaires? That is the question to ask. Then you look at the traditional and contemporary art of those countries. That would be the strategy. Now might be a fantastic time to build up a collection of things you really want.

What would you buy?

I collect old financial securities. It depends on whether you regard that as art.
