Street artist Banksy has seen two of his murals vandalized this week in his hometown. First an imageof a naked man hanging from a window sill, which was supposed to berestored this week at its Park Street location, was defaced with blue paint splashes. Then The Mild Mild West, a picture of a policeman and a bear, was also splattered with blue paint.
It's not the first time The Mild Mild West has been attacked. In April it was splashed with red paint by a group calling itself Appropriate Media, which said the action was a protest against gentrification of the city's Stokes Croft area. The red paint was later cleaned by community volunteers. Businessman Albert Murphy, a Conservative councillor for Avonmouth, said he was cleaning the Park Street work himself because the council was unable to. Meanwhile, this summer the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery is showing a free exhibition of Banksy's work, which has drawn thousands of visitors.
