Spain’s Madrazo Collection Headed for Permanent Home

Published: July 17, 2009
MADRID—Works by the Madrazos, a Spanish family of distinguished 19th-century painters, are likely headed for a permanent home next year in the city of Alcalá de Henares, with some exhibition stops along the way.

The collection, valued at €2.9 million ($4 million), consists of 84 oils by three generations of the family: José and his sons Federico and Luis and Federico’s sons Raimundo and Ricardo. The works were acquired by the Community of Madrid in lieu of taxes owed by descendants of the family and are now on display at Antiguo Hospital de Santa María la Rica in Alcalá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site northeast of Madrid. Plans call for temporary exhibitions this year in various Spanish cities and possibly Italy before the collection goes to Alcalá, where a building to house the works is being sought.
