Foster to Re-Embark on West Kowloon Project

Published: July 22, 2009
HONG KONG— British architecture firm Foster + Partners has officially been renamed the designer of Hong Kong’s $2.7 billion West Kowloon Cultural District. The group originally won an international competition to plan the new cultural hub, but their concept was viewed as too complicated by developers and shelved in 2006.

The new district will encompass numerous theaters and concert halls, as well as a modern art museum. Norman Foster, together with local designer Rocco Yim Sen-kee and Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, will act as consultants on the Kowloon project, participating in a number of upcoming public forums to help determine the desired appearance and ambiance of the space as they move forward. Foster’s original concept for the district was essentially an enormous glass canopy, but the potential develops proved less than enthusiastic.
