British Museum Partners With Abu Dhabi on National Museum

Due to open in 2013 and designed by Norman Foster, the Zayed National Museum will be the cornerstone of an ambitious cultural project on the island, which is off the Abu Dhabi coast. As part of a 10-year contract, the British Museum will lend some of its treasures to the venue and help it set up and curate exhibitions. Artifacts may be borrowed from the British Museum’s Middle East department, and temporary exhibitions could also be transferred to Abu Dhabi. Although the Louvre and Guggenheim offshoots will include much western art, the Zayed museum will mainly feature exhibits relevant to the region; one gallery, for instance, will be devoted to "the story of oil." Meanwhile, the British Museum’s undisclosed annual fee from Abu Dhabi could help fund its planned extension in London as British government spending for the arts faces cuts. |
