Mural Makeovers at 30 Rock

Published: July 28, 2009
NEW YORK—The artwork that lines the lobby of Rockefeller Center's 30 Rockefeller Plaza will be undergoing a massive restoration effort over the next two years. EverGreene Architectural Arts, a Manhattan company that has previously worked on art housed in such places as Radio City Music Hall, will be responsible for the effort.

Currently, conservators are hard at work behind scrims — giant photographs of the murals that hide both the originals and their restorers. A main goal is to restore lightness to the pieces, which have been darkened over 80 years of exposure and previous restoration attempts. The lobby was originally designed by Edward Trumbull and features work by José María Sert and Frank Brangwyn.
