Mystery Brewing Over Mexican Artifacts

Published: July 29, 2009
NEW YORK— A barrel of Mexican artifacts found in the trash in the late artist Clinton Hill’s Manhattan apartment could spark an international custody battle. Since 2004, the pieces have been in the possession of Nick DiMola, a Queens man who discovered them while his company was cleaning out Hill’s home after his death.

DiMola recently rediscovered the artifacts in his home and, intending to sell them, invited the Mexican Cultural Institute to photograph and appraise them. What he received instead was notice that they may belong to the Mexican government and that he doesn’t own them at all. While it is unclear how many of the artifacts are genuine and how much they are worth, both parties feel they have an authentic claim to them. DiMola has since decided that he wants to donate the pieces, not to Mexico but to American museums and the Mexican Consulate in New York.
