Huge Collection of Da Vinci Work to Get First Display

Published: July 29, 2009
MILAN—A sprawling collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s writings and drawings, totaling 1,119 pages, will go on public display in September for the first time, in 24 separate exhibitions.

Ranging from studies of bird flight to sketches of complex machinery, the Codex Atlanticus consists of 12 volumes containing works da Vinci made between 1478 and 1518. Fifty pages will be displayed at each exhibition for three months, with the first display on September 10 and the final exhibition not taking place until 2015. Two of da Vinci’s drawings will be displayed for free in advance, from now through August 31 in Milan's Palazzo Marino. The Codex Atlanticus is currently kept in the city's Biblioteca Ambrosiana.
