D’Orsay Comes to De Young

Published: July 31, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO—Two landmark exhibitions of seminal works of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art, each including approximately 100 paintings from the Musée d’Orsay’s permanent collection, will be on view at this city’s de Young Museum for a combined eight months while the Paris institution is partially closed.

Nearly 40 artists will be represented, including Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Rousseau, Seurat, Sisley, Toulouse-Lautrec, van Gogh, and Vuillard. Among the masterworks to be displayed are Manet's The Fife Player (1866), Monet's Saint-Lazare Station (1877), Seurat's The Circus, and The Artist’s Bedroom at Arles by van Gogh.

“Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces From the Musée d’Orsay” and “Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and Beyond: Post-Impressionist Masterpieces From the Musée d’Orsay” will go on display consecutively, beginning in May 2010 and ending in January 2011. The de Young will be the only museum to host the twin exhibitions as the Musée d’Orsay undergoes refurbishment and reinstallations in preparation for its 25th anniversary in 2011. Tickets go on sale for the general public on March 15, 2010, with group tickets available on October 1, 2009, and member tickets on January 31, 2010.
