Warhol-Produced Musical Released on CD

Published: July 31, 2009
NEW YORK— Andy Warhol’s brief stint as a Broadway producer has been memorialized on a CD of the 1975 musical Man on the Moon, an ill-fated effort that closed after only five performances and terrible reviews.

Written by Mamas & the Papas leader and songwriter John Phillips and directed by frequent Warhol collaborator Paul Morrissey, the campy production tells the story of a bomb, played by a man, that is sent to the moon. An astronaut is sent to detonate it but encounters extraterrestrials who try to convince him not to complete his mission. Titled Andy Warhol Presents Man on the Moon, the CD consists mainly of recordings of the songs by Phillips with a backing band but also includes five unique tracks of the fully orchestrated show that Warhol recorded with a portable cassette recorder. The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh converted the cassette tapes into digital files that were then spruced up at a New York studio for the current release.
