Hadid Pavilion Opens at Last in Chicago’s Millennium Park

Published: August 4, 2009
CHICAGO— After several delays and the replacement of the original contractor, Zaha Hadid's Millennium Park pavilion is opening today.

One of two structures commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1909 Plan of Chicago, also known as the Burnham Plan after architect Daniel Burnham, the organically shaped, aluminum-framed structure measures 90 feet long, 60 feet wide, and 20 feet high and is covered by a stretchy, synthetic fabric that's zippered together. It was supposed to open June 19, and in July contractor Fabric Images took over from TenFab Design, which was unable to finish the pavilion by the middle of the month. Fabric was given an August 1 deadline to finish the aluminum framework as well as make and install the fabric that creates the pavilion's exterior and interior walls. A second pavilion, designed by Amsterdam architect Ben van Berkel, opened on schedule June 19. Both will remain open until Oct. 31.
