Memphis’s Power House Gallery to Close

MEMPHIS— Tennessee art gallery Power House Memphis will close its doors August 31 as a result of two things: the challenging economy and a bout of bad luck. The contemporary-art space, housed in an industrial brick building that once supplied power to the city’s railway, had shown the work of such artists as Paul Graham, Melissa McGill, Glen Ligon, and Wangechi Mutu, among others.

Executive Director Rehema Barber announced last week that the 6-year-old gallery will close due to "the current economic climate." Power House's board chairman, James Patterson, pointed out that “all of our grants ended at the same time — the Hyde Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation — and we weren't able to get them back."
