Police Tell Plinth Participant to Cover Up

Published: August 13, 2009
LONDON—A participant in Antony Gormley's latest public art project was greeted by cheers and a cry of “Well done, mate” yesterday — until police told him to put his pants back on.

The "living sculpture," who gave his name only as Simon, was lowered onto the plinth in Trafalgar Square fully clothed, then proceeded to undress. Minutes later, organizers instructed him to cover up, on orders from the police. Launched last month, Gormley’s artwork, One & Other, has randomly chosen people standing for an hour on the Fourth Plinth, a vacant platform, 24 hours a day through October 14. A spokeswoman for the artist said he had expected nudists to take part, and two others have preceded Simon, including a male participant going by the name Lilac Bonzai, who appeared in a dress, fishnet tights, and high heels before baring it all.
