NYU Excavations Point to Temple Site on Island Off Cyprus

Published: August 14, 2009
An island off of Cyprus appears to have been the site of a temple for worshipping Apollo, based on excavations led by New York University.

Archaeologists on the island of Geronisos unearthed a sculptured lion’s head that may have been plastered and painted as an adornment for a monumental structure, possibly a temple. They also found fragments of pithoi, storage vessels probably used to hold olive oil. The vessel fragments, which date from the 1st century B.C., were found in what appears to be a storeroom or pantry facility that may have served a complex of previously found dining rooms. Previous digs on the island showed that Geronisos was an ancient religious tourist center where Apollo — the god of light, the sun, music, and prophecy — was worshipped.
