Oct. 1979: Frederic Edwin Church’s The Icebergs, 1861, sells at Sotheby Parke Bernet for $2.5 million, a record for an American artist and for a work of art sold in the U.S. Nov. 1979: Man Ray’s À l’heure de l’observatoire: les amoureux, 1932-34 brings $750,000 in Sotheby Parke Bernet’s sale of the Surrealist-art collection of former L.A. dealer William N. Copley. The 65 lots bring a total of $6 million. Dec. 1979: The René Rasmussen collection of tribal art, considered "one of the best to come on the Parisian market since World War II," brings $1.5 million. April 1980: At Christie’s a 16th-century Last Judgment, from the Novgorod school, fetches $150,000, a record for a Russian icon. Oct. 1980: Marc Chagall’s Le marchand de bestiaux brings $450,000 at Christie’s, a record for a living artist. May 1981: A three-part sale of Edward T. Chow’s historic collection of Chinese ceramics and works of art grosses $20.1 million at Sotheby Parke Bernet in Hong Kong. April 1982: A gilt-copper Statue of Liberty weather vane from the Thomas Rizzo collection sells for $82,500 at Sotheby’s. May 1984: Contents of the Palm Beach home of Jayne and Charles Wrightsman, the most important collectors of French furniture in the U.S., bring an extraordinary $4.8 million at Sotheby’s. April 1985: Andrea Mantegna’s Adoration of the Magi brings £7.5 million ($10.5 million) at Christie’s London. April 1987: Sotheby’s Geneva sells the Duchess of Windsor’s jewels, including a Van Cleef & Arpels ruby and diamond necklace. Estimated at $7 million, the sale rakes in $33.5 million.
