The paintings, Talung Monastery and Himalayas, are worth a total of about $30,000. They are both small — one is 10 by 14 inches, the other 12 by 16 inches — and the museum’s director thinks their size may have facilitated the crime. Located in a brownstone and open only three hours a day, the Nicholas Roerich Museum displays about 150 works by the prolific artist, who produced about 7,000 paintings in the early 20th century. He was best known as a costume and set designer and worked on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. The museum has lacked conventional security since it opened in 1949, but is now installing security cameras and motion detectors. Read more at the New York Times. |
