Hindu Groups Threaten Indian Artist

Published: August 18, 2009
Another Indian artist is reporting being threatened by extremist Hindu groups for his depictions of a Hindu god. Subodh Kerkar told the Agence France-Presse that he has been targeted for his artworks showing the male elephant-headed god Ganesha in various unconventional poses, including as an Oscar statue, walking naked carrying a rake, and in a pose similar to Rodin's The Thinker.

"I have been receiving phone calls which threaten me with dire consequences," Kerkar said. "They told me that they will chop off my fingers for indulging in such acts." The artist has been targeted by hard-line Hindu groups Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Jangruti Samiti, the latter one of the main organizations responsible for protesting the work of another Indian artist, M.F. Husain, a situation that has led to death threats, court cases, and self-imposed exile. HJS organizer Jayesh Thali said the group has called for demonstrations at the exhibition venue where Kerkar's work will be shown adding, "We intend to have peaceful protests, but we are not responsible for any law and order problem if it arises."
