The associate curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York discusses her upcoming show, "New Photography 2009," on view September 30 through January 11, 2010.

NEW YORK—"As I was looking at art with this show in mind, I noticed a shared interest in a retreat to the studio and to the darkroom to create something with a handmade aesthetic. That is a point of fascination for the six artists in this exhibition. Some, like Daniel Gordon and Sara VanDerBeek, begin by assembling items for the camera, and Leslie Hewitt’s work incorporates both sculptural and photographic elements. Movement between mediums is fluid. We’re also at a moment between analogue and digital technology. Walead Beshty, who makes pictures in the darkroom, is solidly in the analogue camp, while Sterling Ruby and Carter Mull manipulate existing images and make evident their use of Photoshop. These figures are the best of their generation working at the moment."
