SHANGHAI—"
ShContemporary will have
quite a fresh and experimental feel," the fair’s new director,
Colin Chinnery, says of its
third edition, at the palatial
Shanghai Exhibition Center from September 10 through 13. Chinnery has
invited
Mami Kataoka, a curator with Tokyo’s
Mori Art Museum; e-flux founder
Anton Vidokle; and
Chinese video artist
Wang Jianwei to curate "Discovering Contemporary." The exhibition
showcases significant artists from the past two decades, such as
Teppei Kaneuji, of Japan, and
Sanggil
Kim, of South Korea. ShContemporary’s main section, the "Best of Galleries," returns
with works by established Asian artists, including
Yu Hong’s
Us Two: Yu Hong and Zhao Bo 2,
2007, and
Zhang Hui’s
Downward-Blind Road, 2009, which can be found at Beijing’s
Long March Space.
James Cohan Gallery, of New York and Shanghai, is back for the third consecutive
year, offering tapestry works by
Fred Tomaselli and
Beatriz Milhazes. "Shanghai has great
character," says
Arthur Solway, director of Cohan’s Shanghai branch. "It’s a
sophisticated city with a sophisticated audience."
