A luxury car dealership may not be the first place one would expect to find an original Michael Jackson portrait these days, but that is, in fact, where one resides. The artwork, titled The Book and painted in 1990 by Australian artist Brett-Livingstone Strong, is on view at Dancy-Power Automotive Group in Harlem, which announced yesterday that the painting is going up for sale.
Allegedly the only portrait Jackson ever sat for, The Book depicts the King of Pop as a contemporary Renaissance man in a fairy-tale-like setting, with a statue of Peter Pan in the background. Dancy-Power says it is talking with various auction houses about selling the painting, which sold for $2.1 million the year it was created, making it the most expensive contemporary painting of a living person. A portion of the future proceeds will benefit the Harlem School of the Arts.
