A new, high-intensity X-ray technique developed by scientists at
Cornell University has uncovered a lost illustration by artist
N.C. Wyeth. Hidden just below another of Wyeth’s works, a family portrait featuring his more famous son,
Andrew, is a lost illustration that originally ran alongside an article in
Everybody’s Magazine. Although scientists had previously been able to detect painted-over pieces in black and white, this is the first time where a full-color piece has been revealed.
Christine Podmaniczky, a curator for the N.C. Wyeth collections at the
Brandywine River Museum, believes that more illustrations are to be found, and that the new technology will help reveal them.
