Two artworks depicting the busts of 19th-century Aboriginal leaders Truganini and Woureddy have been pulled from an auction due to take place tonight at Sotheby’s in Australia. The busts were expected to pull in up to AUS$700,000 ($588,000) total, but their proposed sale was protested by aboriginal leaders who implored the sellers to return the works to the Indigenous community, which they say is hurt by the use of the images and the intent to use them to make money.
Though Sotheby’s had originally decided to go ahead with the sale despite the trouble brewing over the busts, the auction house said it reconsidered due to a desire to protect the works, the public, and Sotheby's staff from possible protest.
