Director James Gray, seen here with actress Gwyneth Paltrow at a February screening of their film "Two Lovers," has spoken out against the possible cancellation of LACMA's weekend film series.

LOS ANGELES— The back-and-forth imbroglio over the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s weekend film series — it’s gone, it’s resurrected, it’s still in danger of ending — has a number of movie directors speaking out on why shutting it down would be a bad idea.

It all started two weeks ago, when Martin Scorsese wrote an open letter to LACMA and its director, Michael Govan, imploring him to reassess his decision to cancel the weekend film series. Today, the Los Angeles Times offers the opinions of many other film directors, all of whom agree that eliminating the program would be a disservice to film’s capital city and to movie lovers alike. Commentary ranged from the practical — “I don't think it's unexpected, but it's the exact opposite of what needs to happen,” said Two Lovers director James Gray — to the more straightforward. Said John Landis, of Animal House fame, “I don't think the current director gives a s--t about film. ... This is L.A., for chrissakes.”
