Aluna, a lunar clock, is due for completion in 2012.

LONDON— Artists here are busy with plans for a massive lunar clock, a timekeeping landmark that they hope will rival Big Ben.

Completion of the timepiece, which will run on the Thames River's currents, is scheduled for the 2012 Olympic Games. The idea is to create a clock that not only incorporates green elements — it will be made from recycled glass — but also “tries to connect us back to the cosmic cycle, with nature,” says astronomer Dr. Usama Hasan. It's a principle he thinks is “very important, especially in the very technological age we live in." According to the artists, a number of corporations have come forward to offer help in building the clock, called “Aluna.”
