LONDON—Photographer
Martin Parr has decided to rectify what he sees as a serious gap in Britain’s national art collection by leaving his personal compilation of photographs to one of the country’s major museums. Over the years, Parr, a Magnum photographer, has compiled a collection of around 700 photographs spanning 50 years by such artists as
Tony Ray-Jones,
John Hinde,
Paul Graham,
Chris Killip, and
Graham Smith. Parr feels that his favored medium is somewhat overlooked by the British, telling the
Art Newspaper, “In Britain we marginalize photography compared with mainland Europe, where its status is much higher.” Parr has been in talks with both the
Tate Modern and the
Victoria & Albert Museum, and notes that he intends to donate the works, not sell them.
