Stockholm Oct. 10 – Dec. 6, 2009 In his seminal work Line Describing a Cone (1973), the British-born artist Anthony McCall began with a small dot. On a wall he projected a small white circle that slowly grew to a circular line suspended in midair, then to a conical sculpture made of light. The work, the first of his "solid light" films, captured both the illusion of movement in film and the substantial corporality of sculpture. After a three-decade hiatus from creating art, McCall returned at the 2004 Whitney Biennial with Doubling Back (2003), an extension of his earlier light installations, in which two identical light waves undulate toward and away from each other. This work, along with another light installation, You and I, Horizontal (2005), will be on view as part of his solo show opening this month at the Moderna Museet. Curated by the museum’s director, Lars Nittve, the exhibition will also feature some 30 drawings showing the different motions of light waves, which the artist refers to as "scores" of his films. "Moderna Museet Now / Anthony McCall" originally appeared in the October 2009 issue of Modern Painters.
