In Argentina, Andy Warhol may be revered as one of the most influential American artists — inspiring more than just the platinum hairstyles of native artist Marta Minujin — but never before has the country held an exhibition of this magnitude devoted to his oeuvre. "Andy Warhol: Mr. America," organized in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Museum, comprises 170 artworks of varied mediums, including Silver Clouds (1966), an installation of metallic, helium-filled balloons floating like giant pillows. In the museum’s theater, 44 of Warhol’s experimental films will be projected, offering viewers a glimpse into the decadent celebrity culture of the ’60s. The exhibition will also showcase several of Warhol’s later works, such as Mao (1972) and the haunting 1986 self-portrait, produced just months before his death. According to many South Americans, and as the title of this exhibition implies, Warhol is "the most American of American artists," with both his work and his persona coming to embody the defining characteristics of American pop culture: celebrity, glamour, and sex.
