NEW YORK—Everybody loves the first night of the fall season in Chelsea. What could be more enjoyable than fighting your way through overcrowded streets and exhibitions, seeing and being seen, and trying to avoid spilling a plastic cup of cheap wine?

Plus, this year there's the added suspense of seeing who survived the summer. There have been formal closing announcements here and there — from Caren Golden, Charles Cowles, and Bellwether, for example — but there have also been whispers that some places that claimed to be undergoing “refurbishment” or “relocation” may have in fact slipped out of business. It will become clearer over the next month whether the depressed economy will continue to wreak havoc with the Chelsea scene, or whether the market is ready for renewal.

At ARTINFO we like to be optimistic, and in compiling our roundup of some of the best things that definitely will be opening this Thursday, Sept. 10, we found plenty to be enthusiastic about: familiar names and new ones, shows ambitious and modest, and a wide range of work to contemplate and enjoy — recession woes and giant crowds be damned.
