Vancouver’s Helen Pitt Gallery will close its doors in October due to a loss of funding. The artist-run gallery had been receiving about $35,000 per year, a sum that covered only half of its operating costs.

Many arts and community organizations in British Columbia are suffering the same fate, after a reassessment of funding by the government in recent weeks. The gallery is searching for a donated space in the hopes that it can continue. Over the 30 years of its existence, the Helen Pitt introduced many Canadian artists, including Attila Richard Lucas and Angela Grossmann. It also occasionally served as a performance space, notably for punk band U-J3RK5 in the 1970s.
