LOS ANGELES—An L.A. exhibit featuring five Iranian artists is in jeopardy after the curator experienced trouble not only communicating with the artists, but also receiving the artwork due to appear in the show. Though the exhibit will open today, it will be incomplete: Postal workers in Iran have turned some of the artworks away as the artists attempted to ship them, deeming them unfit to be sent to the U.S.

Generally the workers found the works too politically out of line with the reigning party in Iran. One artist, known as ICY, told the show's curator, Shervin Shahbazi, that he was told his work couldn’t be sent “because they have green color," which is associated with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s opposition. The political strife, however, is what gallery owner Alex "Man One" Poli feels makes the exhibition so relevant: "Some people say they don't connect with art in a museum," he told the Los Angeles Times, "but when you see work like this and all the stuff associated with it, you say, 'Wow, this is happening now, this is real life.'" "From the Streets of Iran” runs at Crewest Gallery through Sept. 26.
