Italian Couple Opens Contemporary Collection to the Public

Published: September 10, 2009
CITTA DELLA PIEVE, Italy— In this medieval village about two hours north of Rome, an Italian couple is making their 300-piece collection of artwork available to the public for two days week.

Angela and Massimo Lauro, the nephew of an Italian shipping magnate, will open their private museum, Il Giardini dei Lauri, or Garden of the Laurels, this Sunday; after that, visitors are welcome on Fridays and Saturdays. About five years ago, Massimo, who has been collecting art since the 1990s, began focusing on works by younger artists. He says he hope that focus — on art made in the 1990s or later, mostly by artists under 40 — will draw contemporary-art enthusiasts as well as tourists to the museum. The collection includes works by Urs Fischer, Takashi Murakami, and the late Dash Snow. The museum’s opening this Sunday will include a performance piece that involves a group of artists jumping into a swimming pool filled with mud.
