Fourth Plinth Hosts Plea From Texas Death Row Inmate

Published: September 10, 2009
LONDON—Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth today became the site of a plea from a prisoner on death row when Briton Linda Carty, convicted of murder in Texas in 2002, appeared at the public art space — kind of — to ask the British people and government for their help in stopping her execution.

From 10 to 11 this morning, a life-size cardboard cutout of Carty stood on the plinth while a recording of her asking for help from her Texas prison cell was played. Convicted of taking part in the murder of her 25-year-old neighbor, the former elementary school teacher has maintained her innocence from the beginning, but now may be only months away from execution. Carty, who was born in a British territory, says she was never informed of her right to British assistance at the time of her arrest in the United States. The cutout is part of artist Antony Gormley’s popular installation “One & Other,” which allows volunteers to take to the plinth for one-hour stretches, ongoing through October 14.

In related news, Edinburgh seems to be trying to get some of what London's having: The Edinburgh World Heritage organization is drawing up plans for a similar platform at the city's Waverly Station, where an abandoned plinth now stands opposite the city’s biggest museum, the Ingleby Gallery.
