Dushko Petrovich and Roger White

Published: September 15, 2009
In "Fall Forecast," Sarah Douglas asked art world insiders what they predict will be the biggest shows, trends, and topics of discussion this season. Here, she poses the same questions to Dushko Petrovich and Roger White, publishers of the art journal Paper Monument, who know a bit about questionnaires, having just compiled a collection of them into the lively and informative pamphlet “I Like Your Work: Art and Etiquette.”

What will be the most talked about show this season?

“I heard about this cool project where they do a Facebook with actual, true status updates, like ‘I just finished masturbating’ or ‘Man, my ex-girlfriend looks hot but I better not write a comment.’ It’s pretty funny, and they’ve got some famous people on there —”

“Like who?”

“The one with Žižek is pretty funny.”

What are you most looking forward to this season?

“It’s this performance piece where this guy goes into some everyday situations — like on the subway, in the café, to an opening. Except he doesn’t wear a belt.”

Best emerging trend:

“I’m kind of not even thinking about art so much anymore. The gallery system isn’t the most interesting model right now for displaying things; it’s embedded in a concept of the artwork, which is just so obviously on its way out. I’ve been spending a lot of time online. There are 13-year-olds in Shanghai right now that are making incredible interactive virtual sculptures — you can get them on your phone. One was this amazing psychedelic tree that you climb up, and on the branches are weird animals that look like little elfin monkeys. This is so far beyond, for example, Matt Barney that it makes you wonder what the fuck we’re doing with our lives.”

Worst emerging trend:

“Like a cross between Grant Wood and Blinky Palermo. But it’s not really a formalist thing; he also gives lectures. And there’s a band, I think — what is it called? Autotuna, Autobot, something like that. But they don’t play, it’s more about exploring a concept of brand identity that exists in secondary manifestations like posters and journalistic references.”

“I love Blinky Palermo right now.”

The art world would be a far better place if…

“She’s working on video piece she says will bring an end to language inflation once and for all.”

“You mean in the art world?”

“No, everywhere.”

Who is overdue for a museum retrospective?

Robert Storr!?”

Overrated:

“Did you see her on television?”

“She was on TV?”

“Yeah, they were doing the usual shot of Spike Lee in the crowd at a Knicks game, and she was right there next to him!”

Underrated:

“Do you know Phil? He does the thing, the thing at the space, with Carl. Carl used to work for Sam, in the 90. Sam when he made the sculptures, before he did the films. Carl was Sam’s main guy, and he made all those pieces for Sam, the chickens one and the refrigerator one and the dick one. That was actually Carl’s dick in that piece.”

Is there anything left to say about the recession?

“Did you notice how nice what's her name was when we passed her booth? Last year she wouldn’t even look at us. I think we’re getting somewhere.”

“Things are totally falling apart.”
