Shirin Neshat Wins Silver Lion for Debut Film

VENICE—Filmmaker Shirin Neshat has been awarded the Silver Lion, the award for best director, at this year’s Venice Film Festival for her debut film, Zanan Bedoone Mardan (Women Without Men).

The Iranian-American director’s movie follows the story of four women living in Iran during the political unrest in 1953. While attending the film’s debut at the festival, Neshat and her cast dressed in green in solidarity for the citizens of Iran, whose current situation she compares to the lives of the characters in her film. A photographer and video artist, Neshat is known for her portraits of women entirely overlaid by Persian calligraphy. She has also directed several videos.
