California Architect Proposes Plan for World’s Tallest Building

SANTA MONICA, Calif.—
Architect Tommy Landau has created a design for a tower that would stand as the tallest building in the world, 224 stories high and twice as big as the Empire State Building. The proposed structure would sit on a man-made island off the coast of Abu Dhabi and would house condominiums, a museum, and restaurants, among other things.
The tower would also have unusual bragging rights when it comes to energy efficiency. A consultant on the project says that by the time the building is erected, it will be able to create more energy than it uses by way of solar power equipment. The proposal for the $3.5 billion tower is being considered by a planning committee in Abu Dhabi. The 72-year-old Landau, of Santa Monica, has called the building his “swan song,” telling the L.A. Times that if the plan is approved, he will parachute off the tower upon its completion. |
