Yinka Shonibare’s “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Africa)” (2008) was among the works donated for the "Art for Africa" auction at Sotheby’s in London.

LONDON—Works by leading South African and British artists will be auctioned Sept. 21 at Sotheby’s London to benefit Art for Africa, which aims to raise £350,000 to £500,000 ($826,000) to help two charities, the Africa Foundation and Ikamva Labantu.

Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, David Goldblatt, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, Antony Gormley, and Yinka Shonibare are among the artists who have donated works. The charities fund and facilitate the care and support of orphaned and vulnerable children. The auction will include a painting created by David Bowie in collaboration with South African artist Beezy Bailey. The 1994 painting, titled Nahodka Westward by Train, was inspired by a train trip Bowie made in Japan in the 1970s. It was created while Bowie interviewed Bailey for an art magazine, after Bailey suggested the pair paint together at the same time. It is estimated to fetch £2,000 to £3,000.
