The city of Palm Springs is trying to reduce the signs of recession in its streets by filling its vacant storefronts with art; the city has invited local artists to display their work in the windows of empty retail space. Palm Springs will foot the bill for the installations in the hopes that they will bring energy to the area, which has been suffering, like the rest of the country, from the frequent closings of local businesses. Though nothing is official yet, the city is expected to soon make it a requirement that property owners hang art, or photos of old Hollywood, in the windows to help keep up Palm Springs’s reputation as a lovely tourist destination.
