New Public Art Venue Vandalized in New York

Published: September 24, 2009
NEW YORK—It seems that not everyone is pleased with New York’s newest public art site, LentSpace. Graffiti that reads, “This is not art!” was discovered yesterday on some of the pieces in the park, including Ryan Taber’s Pompey’s Folly (2006) and Graham Hudson’s Canal St. Commons (2009).

The temporary public art venue is being run by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and is located on the block bordered by Grand, Varick, and Canal streets and Sixth Avenue. The real estate is owned by the Trinity Real Estate Corp., which decided to open it to cultural activity after being unable to find a commercial tenant for the space.
